The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, rooted in decades of territorial disputes, has evolved into an ongoing struggle that encompasses complex political, humanitarian, and human rights dimensions. Regrettably, the Palestine war has increasingly become a human rights issue, with violations occurring on both sides of the conflict. In this blog, we will examine key reasons behind this distressing reality, substantiating our claims with credible sources.
1. Military Occupation and Displacement:
The Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, particularly the West Bank and East Jerusalem, has resulted in widespread human rights violations. Palestinian civilians endure daily hardships, ranging from movement restrictions and home demolitions to arbitrary detentions and lack of access to water and healthcare (UNHRC, 2018). The United Nations has expressed deep concern over these infringements, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rights of the occupied population (UNHRC, 2019).
2. Land Confiscation and Settlement Expansion:
Israel's large-scale construction of settlements in the West Bank is not only a barrier to a peaceful resolution but also a clear violation of international law. Palestinians frequently face land seizures, demolitions, and forced evictions to make way for Israeli settlements, undermining their basic human rights (Amnesty International, 2021). This contentious issue has drawn international condemnation and attention from human rights watchdogs (Human Rights Watch, 2021).
3. Violations of Freedom of Movement and Expression:
The ongoing conflict has severely limited Palestinians' freedom of movement through military checkpoints, barriers, and a vast separation wall (Amnesty International, 2021). These restrictions contribute to economic stagnation, social fragmentation, and limited access to education, healthcare, and other fundamental services. Moreover, both Palestinian and Israeli civilians regularly face threats, violence, and terrorism, causing immense suffering on both sides.
4. Targeting of Civilians and Excessive Use of Force:
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has led to grave human rights violations involving the targeting of civilians and the excessive use of force. Amnesty International has frequently reported on incidents involving the killing and injuring of Palestinian civilians, including children, during protests, military operations, and clashes (Amnesty International, 2020). Similarly, civilian casualties during violent attacks on Israeli civilians have garnered concern and condemnation from numerous international bodies (Human Rights Watch, 2021).
The Palestine conflict is undeniably intertwined with severe human rights concerns that affect both Palestinians and Israelis. The prevalence of military occupation, settlement expansions, and violations of freedom of movement and expression illustrates the deeply rooted human rights crisis. It is imperative for all parties involved, as well as the international community, to address these issues with urgency, fostering dialogue, prioritizing peace, and upholding the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals involved.
